Today we discussed the following movies (above). I mentioned that for some students, the example of the DaVinci Mona Lisa video is not very appealing. It seems dry, academic and foreign to many young students. We all know that is is supposed to be IMPORTANT, but this type of information doesn't engage us as well as it should. Instead, the class will continue to read the textbook and Mr Betz will review some of the important ideas in each chapter. Also, we will take a good look at the life and histories ofJean-Michel Basquiat Mr Betz hopes that this artist's story will engage the students and introduce them to a world of art that isn't always told in the textbooks. Check out the Basquiat videos below.

I also went over the responses to the survey:

Today in class we discussed how to write an effective criticism. We also went over an example of a "Compare and Contrast Criticism" We compared and contrasted two paintings on page 160.
Mr Betz discussed a step-by-step approach to Observations, Analysis, Interpretation and final Evaluation. The notes the students took in class were to be used to develop their own critical writing. Next the class discussed the Jacob Lawrence painting on page 162.

Assignment for Thursday March 25: Pick two artworks from anywhere in our textbook and write a Compare and Contrast Criticism. Follow the four steps. Note artist name, media, size, and page number. This draft can be hand written or typed but the final version of it will need to be typed and uploaded to a special page here on the wiki before the end of the semester.
Bring your completed self-portrait drawing to class Thursday March 25 to be turned in for a grade. I will be looking to see that you have experimented with drawing using contours, hatching and cross hatched lines to create different values. I will not grade on how good of a drawer you are or how realistic it is. The grade will be based on completion, and experimentation.

Thursday March 25
Today in class we discussed the possibility of visiting a local art gallery or museum. Students were asked to consider a day and time when they could spend several hours to drive to this location and tour the space and write about the art work. In exchange for the trip, the students would be relieve of an equal amount of class time.
In class, Mr Betz discussed several artworks and the students generated criticisms for four works from the textbook. To make things more fun, we used the March Madness bracket system of contending artists and discussed who would move forward in this critical system.
Assignment for Tuesday: Complete the next round of the rest of the Sweet Sixteen Artworks. You must work out a complete critical sketch for each work but will only turn in your bracket results.

Today in class we discussed a field trip to a museum or gallery off campus. Students suggested a Friday as the best day and the afternoon as the best time. Mr Betz will look into Reynolda House of American Art as the best location for our trip. We have April 23 as the tentative date. 1-2:30 PM.
Also today, Mr Betz demonstrated so various printing techniques in the Print Studio in FA217. He discussed Silkscreen, Lithography, Intaglio and Relief. Students (Gerald, Tre and Ezra) assisted him in making a print- carving, inking, and running the press.
Assignment for Thursday: Read the next chapter on Printmaking
For Thursday: we will view the current exhibition at Diggs Gallery. There will be a compare and contrast writing assignment similar to past assignments.

Wednesday March 31

Thursday April 1
Today we went to the Diggs Gallery to see the two exhibitions there- the Senior Student Show and the Faculty Show.
Assignment:
Students were asked to create an overall description of the faculty show using notes from an inventory list. General statements about the amount and kind or work exhibited would make a nice introduction to a later and more specific comparison critique. The later compare and contrast section should focus on one artwork that the student thinks is noteworthy and successful. A second piece is to be chosen to discuss a shortfall or weakness. All writing should follow the 4 part writing process Mr. Betz discussed in earlier classes.

Email the finished critique to betzs@wssu.edu as an attachment by Tuesday April 6.

Plans are in place for a visit to Reynolda House Museum of Art. We will tour the house and collection on Friday, April 23 between 1 and 4. One of our major writing assignments will be based on this trip. Students that cannot attend this meeting can go at another time or do the same project based on a visit to the Diggs Gallery.

Today in class, Mr. Betz outlined the rest of the work for the semester. He showed the students where their final portfolios will be on this wiki site and how to add finished assignments to each segment. Email Mr. Betz if you do not see your portfolio. betzs@wssu.edu
Work days for writing will be on April 13, 20 and 22. Mr. Betz will not be available on the 15th of April as he will be going out of town for a lecture at SCAD Atlanta and a conference in Alabama. Our "wrap-up class" will occur on the last day of instruction on April 27.

Today was also the evaluation day. Students filled out evaluation forms regarding Mr. Betz's quality of instruction.

Mr. Betz reminded the students that the class would meet at the Reynolda House Museum of American Art on Friday, April 23. One group will be scheduled for 11 PM and the other scheduled for 1:30 PM. Students that cannot attend the off-site visit can return to the Diggs gallery, however, student cannot write about the same artworks for two different assignments.

Foundations, Teachers, Web Gurus Launch Campaign to Promote Free, Online Educational Materials
A coalition of foundations, educators, and Internet pioneers has launched the Cape Town Open Education Declaration to encourage governments and publishers to make publicly funded educational materials freely available over the Internet.

The declaration grew out of a meeting organized by the New York City-based Open Society Institute and the Shuttleworth Foundation in Durbanville, South Africa, last year, when thirty open education leaders gathered in Cape Town. The resulting document is designed to encourage teachers and students around the world to join the growing movement and use the Web to share, remix, and translate classroom materials to make education more accessible, effective, and flexible.

According to the declaration — which already contains the signatures of more than five hundred individuals and fifty organizations — open sourcing education will provide students with unlimited access to high quality, constantly improving course materials. Open education is particularly relevant in developing and emerging economies, where it allows textbooks and learning materials to be created affordably, and enables small scale, local-content producers to create more diverse offerings than large multinational publishing houses.

"Open education allows every person on earth to access and contribute to the vast pool of knowledge on the Web," said Jimmy Wales, founder of Wikipedia and Wikia and an author of the declaration. "Everyone has something to teach and everyone has something to learn."

“Teachers, Students, Web Gurus, and Foundations Launch Campaign to Transform Education, Call for Free, Adaptable Learning Materials Online.” Open Society Institute Press Release 1/22/08.
